A Tragic Change a Single Year Has Brought in the US

In late October 2024, the landscape was completely different. Ahead of the US presidential election, reflective citizens could admit the nation's deep flaws – its injustices and disparity – however they still could see it as America. A free society. A place where constitutional order held significance. A country led by a dignified and decent official, despite his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we reside in. People believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and shoved into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. The president is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting legal authorities hand over a massive sum of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are being sent across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The Pentagon, renamed the War Department, has practically freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny as it spends potentially totaling nearly $1tn in public funds. Universities, attorney offices, journalism organizations are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are handled as members of the royal family.

“America, just months before its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the edge into autocracy and extremism,” a noted author, stated recently. “Ultimately, faster than I thought feasible, it occurred in America.”

Each day begins to new horrors. It is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone our nation is, and how quickly it has happened.

However, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his highly troubling initial presidency and even after the alerts associated with the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – even after Trump himself said publicly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – a majority of citizens elected him instead of his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to understand that we’re only three-quarters of a year into this administration. Where will an additional three years of this deterioration leave us? And what if that timeframe transforms into a more extended duration, since there is no one to stop this president from determining that a third term is required, possibly for security concerns?

Admittedly, there is still hope. There will be congressional elections the coming year which might establish an alternate balance of power, should Democrats retake one or both houses of Congress. There are public servants who are trying to impose certain responsibility, for example lawmakers who are launching an investigation into the attempted money grab from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could initiate the path to recovery just as the prior selection put us on this regrettable path.

There are numerous residents demonstrating in the streets throughout communities, as they did in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

Robert Reich, commented this week that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is stirring”, just as it did following the Red Scare in that decade or during anti-war demonstrations or in the Nixon controversy.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he recognizes the signals of that revival and notices it unfolding now. As evidence, he cites the recent massive protests, the broad, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to agree to the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.

“The dormant force consistently stays dormant till certain corruption turns extremely harmful, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so disruptive, that he has no choice except to rise.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

At the same time, the major inquiries persist: can America return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its position globally and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind suggests that the second option is correct; that everything might be finished. My hopeful heart, however, tells me that we have to attempt, through all methods we can.

For me, as a media critic, that involves urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For others, it might involve engaging with political races, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to safeguard voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we were in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The truth is, we don’t know. Our sole course is try to continue fighting.

What Provides Me Optimism Currently

The contact I experience with students with aspiring reporters, that are simultaneously hopeful and practical, {always
