At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's history.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.
Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities said.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked across the area.
Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.
Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, together with multiple guns.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
