Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and a third person who ran away subsequent to the explosion was found not long after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the scene showed the property turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the residence was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told news outlets.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the blast had taken place on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
