Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories After Recent Arrests
The Miami Heat recorded 86 opening half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match after player Terry Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Heat were not distracted as they put up eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an league probe into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
