Specialists Spot Russian Fear Operation Targeting Cruise Missile Use
Moscow is conducting a “reflexive control” operation of warnings to discourage the United States from providing precision-guided weapons to Kyiv, as reported by military analysts. A senior Russian lawmaker remarked: “We know these projectiles very well, their operational characteristics, defensive countermeasures, we tested against them in the Syrian conflict, so there is nothing new. Those delivering them and those who use them will face consequences … We will identify methods to damage those who create problems for us.”
Ukrainian Military Push Situation
Kyiv's troops were imposing substantial damage in a military operation in eastern Ukraine, the war's main theatre, the Ukrainian president reported on Wednesday. The Ukrainian president's account, based on a briefing from his top commander, differed from Moscow's speech before defense leadership a day earlier in which he said Moscow's forces possessed the military advantage in every combat zone.
According to analysis covering October's first week, conflict monitors said Russia was incurring heavy casualty rates, especially due to drone strikes by Ukraine, in return for minor territorial gains. Ukrainian forces, Zelenskyy said, were “maintaining our defense along multiple fronts”, highlighting especially Kupiansk, a heavily damaged city in north-eastern Ukraine under intense attacks for several months.
Area Situations
Administrative officials in southern Ukraine of Kherson said offensive operations on Wednesday resulted in three fatalities in and around the city of the same name. Administrative officials of the Sumy oblast, on the border area with neighboring Russia, said three individuals were killed in Russian drone attacks in various areas. Ukraine's air force said it successfully countered the majority of Russian strike and decoy drones overnight into Wednesday.
Military action seriously damaged a Ukrainian energy facility, government sources stated on midweek. Two employees were harmed during the strike, based on information from power utility representatives. They provided no further information, including the facility's position, but Ukrainian authorities said Russia struck energy infrastructure in Ukraine's northern Chernihiv, southern Kherson and eastern Ukraine.
Civilian Impact
In the north-eastern Sumy town of northeastern Ukraine, significantly damaged by the military campaign against the power supply, authorities have created emergency spaces where people can find shelter, drink hot tea, charge their phones and obtain emotional assistance, as reported by administrative leader.
Diplomatic Reactions
Ukraine's ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Wednesday called on European allies to accelerate procurement of United States armaments for Ukraine. “This doesn't mean we favor American weapons rather than French or German or alternative military systems – the reality is that we are asking the America for systems that European countries can't provide,” said the diplomatic representative.
Germany's national police will soon be allowed to intercept unmanned aerial vehicles, security chief announced on midweek, after a spate of drone sightings suspected as Moscow's attempts to conduct surveillance and threaten. Presenting proposed legislation, the representative said police would be authorized “to implement advanced technological measures against drone threats, for example with electronic countermeasures, signal disruption, satellite signal blocking, but also with kinetic methods”.
Regional Security Challenges
European Commission President declared on midweek that the European Union should ramp up its protective capabilities to deter Russia's “hybrid warfare” in response to air incursions, computer network operations and submarine infrastructure disruption. “This is not isolated incidents. They constitute a coherent and escalating campaign,” the representative said in a presentation to the European lawmakers. “Two incidents are coincidence, but three, five, ten – this is a deliberate and targeted ambiguous warfare operation against Europe, and European countries should answer.”
Humanitarian Situation
The Swiss authorities has extended its protection status provided to displaced Ukrainians to at least 4 March 2027. Temporary protection, which allows people to journey internationally as well as seek employment there, is generally limited to a single year but can be extended. “This determination reflects the continued unstable environment and continuing offensive operations across significant Ukrainian territory,” said a Swiss government statement. “Regardless of international peace efforts, a lasting stabilisation that would allow for protected homecoming is not expected in the coming years.”
