On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
